Copyright Infringement Lawsuit
Filed against Emma Chase, Simon & Schuster, EverAfter Romance
In October 2019 I filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Emma Chase, Simon & Schuster, EverAfter Romance, and Emma Chase, LLC for repurposing my book Part-time Princess © July 2014 as Royally Screwed by Emma Chase – published October 2016. We tried to settle but they wouldn’t budge. The only way I could move forward was to sue.

Part-time Princess – a PG-13 royal romantic comedy novel was spread wide open as Chase repurposed it into Royally Screwed – an erotic royal romantic comedy. According to a lawyer I spoke to who works in the romance writing community, it’s easier to re-purpose a book that is in the same genre but a different ‘heat’ level.
Most people are familiar with Copy & Paste plagiarism. But paraphrasing another writer’s work is also plagiarism. Royally Screwed didn’t simply borrow a few lines from my book. Part-time Princess was used as a template, book spread wide open, as Chase repurposed it into Royally Screwed. She kept many of my characters’ names, flipped sentences, added sex and adverbs, and shuffled scenes around.
But Part-time Princess is NOT public domain nor is it Free for the taking.
Most of the repurposing is done in CLUSTERS – which means entire scenes were re-written. There is press on The Passive Voice blog, Jane Friedman’s The Hot Sheet, and Oh No They Didn’t. I have a Go Fund Me to defray legal expenses. You can see short videos of ‘lifts’ on Instagram. To read more about it — go to my blog. I hope you’re never plagiarized. It’s a horrible experience.
Let’s focus on books — way more fun.
